The Washington Monument framed through the colonnade of the Lincoln Memorial. Warm marble columns crowd the left side of the frame and a smooth stone wall closes the right, leaving a narrow opening onto the Reflecting Pool and the obelisk rising beyond it.

This view links two of the Mall's great monuments in a single line. The heavy, sunlit stone in the foreground makes the distant obelisk feel even farther away, and the composition pulls the eye straight down the corridor.
